What is a panic attack?

A panic attack is a feeling of intense fear that is often accompanied by physical and cognitive symptoms.

Physical symptoms of panic attacks include:

  • heart palpitations
  • shortness of breath
  • chest pain or tightness
  • dizziness
  • tingling or numbness
  • sweating
  • chills or hot flashes

Most people often describe feeling as if they are having a heart attack. Some of the cognitive symptoms that arise from having a panic attack may be thoughts of death and dying, feeling unreal or detached from oneself, fear of losing control, and/or fear of becoming insane. Panic attacks begin suddenly usually peaking within 10 minutes and typically last less than half an hour. Panic attacks can be triggered due to specific situations and others may have no specific trigger (Morrison, 1995).

What are the symptoms of a panic attack?

Panic Attack: A period of intense fear in which at least 4 of these symptoms appear suddenly and reach a peak within a couple of minutes.

  • Palpitations, pounding heart, or accelerated heart rate
  • Sweating
  • Trembling or shaking
  • Shortness of breath
  • Choking sensation
  • Chest pain or discomfort
  • Nausea or abdominal distress
  • Derealization or depersonalization
  • Fear of losing control or going crazy
  • Fear of dying
  • Numbness or tingling
  • Chills or hot flashes

Questions about Panic Attacks:

  • Do you have times when you experience a sudden rush of symptoms or uncomfortable physical feelings such as racing heart of dizziness?

How common are Panic Attacks?

Panic attacks are relatively common, about 30% of adults have experienced one in their lifetime. According to the ADAA, about 6 million Americans age 18 or older (2.7%) suffer from panic disorder, which is diagnosed when a person has had at least 2 panic attacks followed by a fear of having another panic attack for at least a month. Women are twice as likely as men to suffer from panic disorder (www.adaa.org).

Causes of Panic Attacks

  • Family history. Panic disorder has been shown to run in families. It may be passed on to some people by one or both parent(s) much like hair or eye color can.
  • Abnormalities in the brain.
  • Substance abuse. Abuse of drugs and alcohol can contribute to panic disorder.
  • Major life stress. Stressful events and major life transitions, such as the death of a loved one, can trigger a panic disorder.

Panic attacks can begin at any age. It is most commonly found between ages 25-30.
